Immigration: residents raise money to help a Syrian family

On October 24th, a Syrian refugee family that will be hosted in Pisa, arrived in Italy, along with about seventy other people straight from Beirut, Lebanon, The Syrian family that come from the city of Homs is made up of the two parents and two children aged 7 and 11 years. Thanks to the humanitarian corridor organised by the Community of Sant’Egidio, the FCEI and the Tavolo delle Chiese Valdesi, as a part of the Mediterranean Hope project, it has been possible to provide them with a safe entrance from the refugee camp in Lebanon.

“The Syrian refugee family will live in Pisa- Leonora Rossi, head of the Pisan project, said. A group of friends who are very committed to giving a practical help to those fleeing war, decided to raise money for eighteen months. The funds raised will cover the costs for renting a house with relevant utilities since the Community of Sant’Egidio has no available accommodation in the area.”

“The Community of Sant’Egidio with which we have been closely and constantly collaborating, will cover other expenses, including clothing and school supplies. Leonora Rossi said. Thus, thanks to the synergy between private and community aid – this is the first example in Italy. It has been possible to ensure an adequate reception project that means sending the kids to school, offering an Italian course, promoted by the Saint’Egidio volunteers to all the family members as well as putting into practise all those actions which, hopefully, will lead to a faster integration.”

Anyone who wanted to support the project can contact the local promoters: Leonora Rossi (leonorarossi74@gmail.com) and the Community of Sant’Egidio (santegidiopisa@gmail.com).
