Humanitarian Corridors: a new group arrives in Italy, including Ahmed, a newborn baby

ROME, FIUMICINO AIRPORT, APRIL 27 – Welcome to Italy, little Ahmed, welcome Ahmad who can’t wait to go back to school. The infant son of a couple of Syrian refugees was the youngest in the small group arrived at Fiumicino Airport thanks to the “humanitarian corridors”, a programme put in place by three religious Ngos and the Italian government.

The president of the Comunita’ di Sant’Egidio Marco Impagliazzo was at the airport to welcome the families – a total of 68 people, while 57 more will arrive tomorrow – along with Paolo Naso of the Federation of Protestant Churches, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mario Giro and Donatella Candura, from the Ministry of Interiors. “You were able to arrive safely, thanks to the corridors, and not risking your lives in the hands of people traffickers”, Impagliazzo told the newly arrived.

The programma is part of an agreement signed last year by Sant’Egidio, the Waldensian Table and the Federation of Protestant Churches in Italy. The new group will bring to almost 800 the number of refugees who were able to begin a new life in Italy since February 2016: some of them were at Fiumicino to give their welcome. (@OnuItalia)
